About Gaitha Crews

My love for working with children began as a teenager.  I worked with them at church, taught piano lessons and worked at a Head Start program as a teacher's assistant. Those experiences helped me to decide that I wanted to be a teacher.  After graduating from Henryetta High School, I received my Bachelor's degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and have most of my hours for a Masters Degree.

My first teaching position was as a third grade teacher at Chandler Public School and later I taught Kindergarten. I stayed at home with my children for several years before going back to teaching.  While raising my children, I often substituted in several school districts.  When the opportunity came along, I went back to teaching Kindergarten in Okmulgee Public School where I remained until retiring in 2008.  I enjoyed retirement very much but am happy to be working again with children, especially in the area of reading.  It seemed to be the perfect job for me and I have enjoyed being back at work with the children and staff at OPS!

I work with children who need some extra help in the area of reading.  The students receive 30 minutes of instruction on a daily basis.  They work hard to achieve the necessary skills to learn to read or to become successful readers.  The iPads that I received from Sonic's Limeades for Learning project have been an added bonus because they make learning to read more fun!  This allows me time to work individually with the students while others are getting instructions from the programs on the iPads.  Other times we work in small groups.  It is so rewarding to watch the students learning and progressing.

Parents, I encourage you to be aware of what the goals are for your child to be a successful student and to be able to promote to the next grade level.  Your help is vital as we all work together in helping your child achieve all of those goals.  Reading daily to your child is so important and it enriches your child's knowledge and builds a better vocabulary.  I believe that if a child struggles in reading, all other areas in the educational process are negatively affected.  I challenge you to find a few minutes each day to read to your child and to listen to your child read to you!  It's a WIN/WIN combination!
